For a great many mature women, powder blush just doesn’t work anymore. In fact, powder in general can make our skin look dry, making us appear much older than we are.
However, used the correct way, a combination of cream and powder is an easy way to perk up our look and give our face a healthy, long-lasting blush of color. Watch this video for all the details – and a few special makeup over 50 tips!
In this interview, Margaret Manning talks with a Sixty and Me favorite, Ariane Poole, a professional makeup artist with over 40 years’ experience, who has her own line of makeup for women of any age.
What Is the Best Blush for Mature Skin?
According to Ariane, the absolute best way for the older woman to brighten up her face is to use a cream blush along with a powder. Applied correctly, it brings a healthy vitality to a woman’s overall look.
She advises us to move on from powder blush and tone down the bronzer. Some of us believe if our skin tone is darker, it’ll give us a glow. It doesn’t, and bronzer is all too easy to overdo. It’s important, however, to know how to apply blush the correct way.
Putting the Blush on the Rose
Correct application is key. To do so, take your favorite cream blush and apply it to the apples of the cheeks, being careful not to put it too close to your eyes. Blend into your skin and follow with a light dusting of a coordinating powder.
You end up with the beautiful glow of the cream and the longevity of the powder. Cream blush typically doesn’t last long, but the powder can keep you looking your best for up to 12 hours!
The objective is to give your face a healthy flush… and avoid the clownish, artificial look.
How Much Blush Should You Use?
Now that you know how to apply, how do you know how much to use? Surprisingly, the color of your outfit has a great deal to do with it. What looks good when you’re wearing one color may seem like too much or too little blush with another.
For example, if you prefer to wear neutral tones like black, camel, taupe, etc. you may want to increase the amount of blush you use as those hues tend to drain the color from your face.
If you just love to wear reds, greens, yellows and other vibrant colors, you’ll want to tone it down a little bit, as those shades already do so much to brighten the face.
Don’t Be Overwhelmed by Too Many Choices!
With all those different brands and shades of blush you see at the makeup counter, how do you know which one to choose? You can’t try them all! First, remember that pinks and corals work well for lighter skin tones and deeper colors are typically best for darker skin.
Also, keep in mind that cream blush is quite versatile. Besides controlling how much you use to get the desired effect, you can also use it on your lips! In addition to looking good, it simply makes life a bit easier, and you won’t have to carry blush AND lipstick around.
