Midlife is a fantastic time of life. We have certainly earned our stripes after decades of raising families, carving out careers, and the many other competing priorities that perhaps have vied for our attention.

As a Confidence Creator, one of my priorities is to make sure that Midlife women know how truly magnetic they are every day. To that end, looking and feeling our best is ageless, in my opinion.

However, the same rules we followed decades ago may not apply to our current lifestyle as midlife women. I offer five style tips that will make a big difference in how you are showing up as a confident and ambitious woman.

Let’s get started on your Midlife magnetism!

#1: Pick a Signature Color!

My passion is working with Midlife women to get visible with their confidence and style. We are not meant to ‘blend into the background.’ No, never, not at all!

I have my clients pick a signature color with one rule; it cannot be black. I can hear your gasps. I can hear what you may be saying. “No black?” “This woman is crazy; black is my signature color!”

It wasn’t too long ago that I insisted on wearing black, it was what I wore! When I did some style soul-searching, looking at photos of me, I was shocked at what I saw, or in this case, didn’t see. I didn’t see me. I was invisible. It was at that exact moment I decided to ditch black from my wardrobe.

The reasons for not wearing black against our face are compelling. When Midlife women don a black piece of clothing, it does the following:

  • Diminishes us by finding our fine lines and wrinkles.
  • It washes us out because black is not a color and it absorbs light, which is why it is diminishing, especially to our faces.
  • If flattens our skin tone.
  • It makes us disappear.

I don’t know about you, but I do not want anything to do with those four bullets above!

So, let’s move on to picking your signature color! Exciting! There are so many other options that will look fantastic on you; you’ll wonder why you didn’t ditch black sooner!

Here are some colors to consider when picking your signature color:

  • Charcoal
  • Hunter Green
  • Navy Blue
  • Eggplant
  • Deep Brown
  • Turquoise
  • Pewter

Of course, whether you’re warm, cool, or both will play into your choice. The point is, you have a whole palette of other decisions that are just waiting for you to wear!

#2: Buy a Kick-Butt Bra (or two)

Studies reveal that upwards of 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra!

I don’t want any woman not to have a great bra, and to have a great bra means having a professional bra fitting.

Most larger retail stores can offer a professional bra fitting and guide you to the right brands based on your measurements.

Believe me; a kick-butt bra is a game-changer for your style. You may remember that bras and underwear, even girdles, were called ‘foundation wear’. Think about it; they serve as the foundation of what we put over them. Great bras that fit:

  • Smooth out our appearance
  • Minimize bulges
  • Stop our breasts from drooping
  • Give us confidence

A kick-butt bra needs to be a staple in your wardrobe, and I promise it is worth the investment.

#3: Choose Solids Over Prints

Wearing prints can be tricky; depending on the size of the pattern, your body shape, and how tall you are, there’s a lot to consider. And sometimes, wearing just prints can age you.

Here’s another solution that marries both solids and prints for a great look. Opt for solid colors for your essential pieces such as blouses, pants, skirts, and dresses. These are much easier to accessorize, and you have more options than printed pieces.

Get your prints in with accessories. Have some fun with adding patterns through accessories:

  • Shoes
  • Belts
  • Scarves
  • Jewelry
  • Bags

Another bonus of solid colors is that they are more versatile than prints and can be paired with other style elements to create different looks.

#4. Replace Your Capris

The goal of dressing is to create length, no matter how tall you are or your body shape.

I tell my clients to think flow. Your clothes should flow naturally, which adds to the illusion of length.

While capris may be comfortable, they are the biggest culprits of interrupting the flow you are trying to create.

When you take a closer look at capris, they typically hit us at the widest part of our calf, which immediately stops the flow and cuts us off. Go ahead and look the next time you create an outfit around them.

I encourage you to opt for shorts or longer, more tapered pants. Of course, the exact cut of pants depends on your body shape.

You will be amazed at how much this tip will help your look!

#5: Opt for Darker Wash Denim

Darker rinse jeans do a couple of amazing things.

First, they are automatically slimming.

Because they are darker, you have more options on how to wear them. They are more versatile than the lighter-washed denim. You can dress them up with a blazer and a higher heel or easily make them casual with a graphic T-shirt and sneakers.

For those of you who are wondering if darker rinse denim is in style, I say it never went out of style. It’s a staple piece of any woman’s wardrobe and can easily be styled for a casual look with a graphic T and sneakers and dressing up with a crisp white blouse, a blazer, and heels.
